The most recent count of the number of lakes in the world by National Geographic was 117 million! Using the latest technology and satellites, they were able to determine the 117 million lakes make up almost 4% of the Earth’s surface. This same article, based on the research, determined the length of shoreline on all of the lakes is approximately 250 times the length of the equator. So, if the equator is 24,901 miles, the shoreline of all lakes is approximately 6.2 million miles today! However, as with all shorelines, being the area between water and land, there is almost always some level of erosion.

Shoreline erosion is a natural process that occurs on lakes, rivers, oceans and anywhere that water meets land. Sometimes the shoreline needs to be protected in order to retain the land and invested structures on the land. Another interesting fact, if we look at just the state of Florida, there are about 30,000 lakes. One of these lakes in central Florida, Lake Hollingsworth, was having an erosion problem due to heavy usage on the public land and wave action, ultimately becoming a safety issue for visitors to the public park.

The City of Lakeland and the engineering firm Amec Foster Wheeler decided to install a TRULINE seawall for its long-life span and lower lifetime cost.
